Running around the various zones and being able to look around and see exactly where on the Bionis you are was pretty magical, and the wildly imaginative setting facilitated my exploration even further, spurring me on to want to find every secret location, and all of the gorgeous vistas. To this day, I have not played a game with a setting I found as imaginative and interesting as the corpses of two dead titans. One of my favorite things about the game is the setting. And the UMs that were more on level for the areas still presented a decent challenge and provided short-term goals to be worked on while going through each zone.

It kept me on my toes, watching so that I didn't accidentally run into any of them (or them running into me, looking at you Territorial Rotbart), and it made me excited to one day come back and kick their asses once I'm high enough level myself. I've always been a fan of world bosses, so wandering around and seeing these giant, hulking level 70+ monstrosities in the early zones was cool. The Unique Monster system was great as well. Different enemies would come out at night or even during different weather. The fact that the music changed between night and day in every zone was also something I adored at the time. I adored exploring the world, which was outstandingly beautiful, with each zone being quite varied both in environment, flora, fauna, even their own weather effects. I really resonated with the characters, the cinematography was unlike anything else I'd seen in most JRPGs at the time, the music made my heart soar and my blood boil, I didn't see most of the plot twists coming, with Prison Island and Mechonis Core being standouts. Back when I played it on the Wii in 2011, it was one of the best RPGs I'd ever played. Well, the website doesn't seem to work for me, so I can't read the article unfortunately, but personally, I'm one of the people who would consider XC1 a masterpiece.
